FAI Intermediate Cup Fourth Round
Ballincollig – 1
Bluebell United – 2
Bluebell United booked their spot in the quarter-final of the FAI Intermediate Cup after they overcame a very difficult Ballincollig challenge at Landing Field on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors controlled the opening period with a number of half chances and were unfortunate not be awarded a penalty just after the half-hour mark.
Ballincollig began to come into the contest as the half came to a close and had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock five minutes from the break Paddy Kelly found space inside the six yard box, however, he blasted the ball over the bar.
However, on the stroke of the half-time whistle, The Bell broke the deadlock when Sean Byrne fizzled a corner kick into the area where John Cleary rose highest to power the ball into the net.
Ballincollig came out of the second-half blocks racing and within two minutes of the restart they were back on level terms when Ian Roche stroked a fine left-footed finish deep into the corner of the net.
The game was back and forth from then on and it really could have gone either way, however, with ten minutes to play Willo McDonagh rolled the ball along the edge of the box to Shane Stritch whose effort flew into the net.
The referee blew his full-time whistle to bring a memorable Intermediate Cup contest to a close and ensure LSL champions Bluebell sealed their spot in the last-eight.
