FAI Intermediate Cup
Avondale hit four second half to ensure Eoin Lougheed’s 13th FAI Intermediate Cup campaign got off to a winning start on Saturday.
The seven time winners, who had five time winner Lougheed as part of the starting 11, were held in the first half by Leeside, but turned on the style post the turnaround to ensure the progressed along the Road to the Aviva.
‘Dale started with real intent but some were left frustrated by some solid home defending and the game was scoreless at the break.
However, within three minutes of the second half the Munster Senior League side were a goal to the good.
Danny O’Connell was bundled over in the box and the referee was forced to point to the spot. Jamie Murphy stepped up and made no mistake from 12 yards to break the deadlock.
Ten minutes later and O’Connell was assisting in more traditional fashion crossing for Declan Cahill to head home after good work from Hughie O’Donovan.
Three minutes later and Avondale had a three goal cushion. Murphy grabbed his second this time from open play making the most of a Karl Caulfield pass to find the net.
The quickfire blitz was then ended by a second Cahill strike Dennis Shovlin the provider this time.
