Newmarket Celtic made the trip to Lahinch on Sunday and turned in an impressive performance to defeat Moher Celtic and open up a 6 point lead at the top of the Premier Division.
Eoin Hayes opened the scoring inside 10 minutes after some great individual play before calmly slotting to the corner. It was 2-0 on 20 minutes when Colin Smyth played David McCarthy through and he kept his cool to finish well. The third arrived after good forward play from McCarthy who played Reidy through and he smashed home from 12 yards out. 3-0 to Newmarket at the break. The fourth arrived before the hour mark when David Reidy crossed low for Daithi O’Connell who expertly glanced the ball past the keeper. It was 5-0 when Reidy was brought down for a penalty and McCarthy scored from the spot despite the best efforts of Clohessy in the Moher goal to keep it out. McCarthy completed his hat-trick 5 minutes later when his left foot strike found the corner. The goal of the game then arrived in some style when the ball broke 25 yards out from goal and McCarthy met it on the half volley and it arrowed into the top corner of the net giving the Moher keeper no chance. Daithi O’Connell wrapped up the scoring with his second of the game on 80 minutes. The final act of the game almost saw Jimin Dooley pull one back for Moher but his low drive was tipped onto the post by Shane Cusack and the final whistle sounded soon after.
