O’Connell Cup Final
Two goals and a Man of the Match performance by youngster Owen Collins secured a youthful St Mary’s Cup success over the weekend.
Collins, one of seven under 21’s in the starting line up shone as the Saints defeated The Dales to life the O’Connell Cup.
Both sides came close in the opening minutes with Avondale’s Jamie Murphy bringing a great save from the Marys keeper in extremely blustery conditions.
The opening goal came on 14 mins when Mary’s won possession and McBride’s cross from the right held kindly in the wind for the unmarked Collins to shoot past Kelleher at the near post.
Mary’s took that lead into the break and managed to double it three minutes shy of the 70 minute mark.
Collins again was the scorer this time he dipped a free kick over the wall and into the bottom corner.
David Spratt got one back in the 90th minute for the Dales but it was a case of too little too late .
