St Patricks CY-1
Gareth Craven hit a double as Malahide claimed victory in an all top flight cup clash on Thursday night.
Two wind assisted strikes in a first half dominated by the Gannon Park side were enough to see Malahide beat strong season starters St Patricks CY and progress to round 2 of the Metro Cup.
The form attacker opened the scoring with just 15 minutes gone in somewhat fortunate circumstances. A cross come shot from as deep as 45 yards was added by a gust of wind and flew over the head of the visiting net minder.
There was nothing fortunate about the set piece specialists second, although the degree of power in which it hit the net might have due to the wind. Ten minutes after he had opened the scoring Craven found the top corner with a brilliant free from all of 25 yards.
Malahide took that two goal cushion into the break, but felt they should of had more having created a number of chances.
When Thomas Dunne buried a header into the roof of the net after a left wing cross ten minutes into the second half a possible CY come back looked on the cards.
However, the sides were relatively evenly matched post the turn around, both had and missed chances and Craven’s strikes proved enough for the hosts to win and progress.
