Munster Senior League Premier Division
Avondale got their league campaign off to a winning start after a tight and tense clash with Mayfield.
The Dales eventually won by two clear goals but the victory wasn’t as comfortable as the scorelines suggests.
Mayfield had the best chance in a first half where openings were at a premium. On 44mins Nathan Gumbo was played in on goal but Dave Kiely got a vital touch on the ball as Gumbo was about to shoot with only Bannon to beat in the Dale goal.
The Dales took a fortunate lead on 48 mins when Sean Brosnan found Simon Falvey, Falvey’s shot from the edge
of the area looked to be saved by McCarthy but somehow spun into the net. The keeper was injured in the process and had to be replaced by Ian Bennis, who himself got injured before full time leaving John Buckley manning the nets.
On 70mins Avondale doubled their advantage when Brosnan slipped a ball to Tom Linehan and he cut the ball back from the byline for Josh O Shea to score to the bottom corner.
