Munster Senior League Premier Division
UCC began the defence of the MSL Premier Division title on Wednesday night with a win in Rockmount. The Student’s had to battle against Rockmount as they began their season later than most, but a strike from Shane Daly in the first half was enough for them to make a perfect start.
new captain Daly got injured in the process and had to be taken off for fresher David Walsh from Waterford.
The rest of the half saw a number of long balls deep in to UCC territory one of which resulted in a home attacker beating the keeper to the ball but heading just wide of the post.
In the second half Rockmount pushed on in search of an equaliser, but the away side absorbed a lot of pressure hoping to hit on the counter attack.
David Walsh had a chance to seal the win when Ben McAuliffe whipped in a ball from the right hand side. Walsh’s flick was saved brilliantly by Brendan O’Connell to his right hand side. As time went on the pressure built with no real clear cut chances until very late on. A Rockmount player found some space at the edge of the box and struck wonderfully with his right foot but O’hanlon made a top quality save up in to the top left hand corner.
