AUL Liddy Cup
Three standout late saves from Ian Doran ensured Rivervalley Rangers progressed past the last 16 of the Liddy Cup on Sunday.
Just like they did against Donnycarney in the Leinster Junior Cup last weekend, Rangers looked comfortable with a two goal cushion going into the final few minutes of the cup clash. However, unlike last week- in a game they eventually lost 5-2- they managed to hold survive a late onslaught thanks to Doran.
Ayrfield managed to pull one back with 15 to go and went all out for an equaliser as the clock ticked down, but Doran ensured the upset of seven days previous wasn’t repeated as he produced goal keeping heroics make sure the AUL Premier A side moved into the next round.
Rivervalley took a goal lead into the half time break as Ronan Murtagh slotted home after being played in by Karl Young on 30 minutes.
Daniel Murphy doubled the lead 10 minutes after the restart, rounding the keeper before rolling the ball into the bottom right hand corner.
RVR looked comfortable in progression pole, but there nerves were tested when with just under 15 to go Ayrfield won and successfully converted a penalty.
Game on! The visitors took over and started to create chances and but for three brilliant saves from recent JSP Player of the Week Doran could have forced extra time.
As it was the Swords side hung on and scrape through to the quarters.
