Douglas Hall – 4
Carrigaline Utd – 2
An entertaining clash on a bitterly cold night in Moneygourney saw Douglas Hall extend their lead at the top of the table to ten points over Avondale Utd.
On 10 minutes Hall hit the front as the Carrig defence failed to clear properly and Danny Kelly clinically finished from 10 yards. Carrigaline responded well and on 20 minutes they were level as the Hall defence let a ball bounce and the centre forward finished well past stand in goalkeeper Mark O’Callaghan, who put in a great performance.
Almost instantly Hall went back in front in what was proving a ding dong battle, the ball was fed into Steve Barry’s feet on the edge of the box and with his back to goal, he took one touch with his right, swivelled and struck a fierce effort with his left into the top right hand corner, it was an incredible effort! The game then settled down and the Hall led 2-1 at half time.
The second half began and Hall were on the front foot again with Decky O’Connell, Steve Barry and Kelly all missing chances. On 63 minutes, Ryan Mealy hit a free kick from 25 yards it took a fierce deflection off the wall and the keeper could not get back across his goal to keep it out. Carrigaline hit back on 75 minutes as a ball into the box bounced around and as Carrig claimed for a penalty, their number 10 slammed the ball home to give them a glimmer of hope. As the game neared a close, a well worked move between Thomas Byrne and Danny Kelly saw the latters effort saved by the keeper on 81 minutes. Then, after 85 minutes, Hall sealed the deal making it 4-2 after a flowing move saw Shane Ahern play in Decky who finished well. The Hall then kept the ball for the last 5 and ran down the clock. It may have been cold but the entertaining football certainly kept the viewers warm in an exciting game!
