After Extra Time
Kilkenny Premier Division big guns Evergreen have dumped champions Collinstown out of the LFA Junior Cup with a late late extra time winner at Evergreen Park on Sunday.
With the game poised at two goals apiece after 90 minutes, extra time was required and right at the death, the home side received a penalty that Darragh Walshe duly dispatched.
In the opening exchanges the hosts had a strong breeze at their backs and with 18 on the clock they opened the scoring through Simon Burke.
That lead didn’t last long however and just a few minutes later Shane Murphy – on as a substitute slotted home the leveler and the scores remained level going into the break.
In the second half the 2015 champions, who only last week slayed Shamrock Rovers in the Senior version of this cup took the lead with 65 on the clock when talented midfielder Dylan Clarke fired home.
Just five minutes later however Evergreen were back in it when Darragh Walshe fired home a cracker to level it up and set up an exciting finish.
With 10 left to play Collinstown came close to a winner when Dylan McKeever crashed his effort off the bar but they could go not closer and extra time was required.
In the second half of extra time Dano Matthews had a strike cleared off line and the Evergreen keeper saved twice from McKeever but just as it looked to be heading for a penalty shoot out, disaster struck for Collinstown when a penalty was awarded against them with just two left to play.
Walshe stepped up and fired past O’Connor to give the hosts a lead which they held onto and booked their spot in the last eight alongside fellow Kilkenny side Thomastown.
