Fitting end to one of the AUL’s biggest rivalries
AUL Premier A
It seemed a fitting way to bring to an end one the AUL’s most famous rivalries.
A brilliant 25 yard Redser Brady effort ensured the last league game between the best of AUL enemies ended in a stalemate.
Sheriff versus Kilbarrack was the Manchester United v Liverpool or Real Madrid versus Barcelona of the Premier A in recent season.
While Kilbarrack slipped off the pace somewhat last term the years previous they were the biggest threat to Sheriff’s dominance. Indeed the high octane, tense, even feisty clashes between the pair would always be the key to silverware.
Sheriff have the better record against their Dublin rivals beating them to the league, more often than not knocking them out of cups and winning Aviva hosted FAI Junior Cup final between the duo.
Regardless of the fact Alan Reilly’s charges more often than not held the upper hand the clashes between the sides were always entertaining and eventful and as a result among the most eagerly anticipated clashes in the amateur calendar.
With Kilbarrack hoping to join the LSL next season last night was most likely the last time the two will meet for some time- and while both had players missing and meet with nothing on the line they typically served up an entertaining affair.
John Rock opened the scoring against a side he has rejoiced in scoring against over the years with a snap shot from 18 yards, but Gav Gaughran equalised from a Brady corner.
Rock then restored his sides advantage before the break as he put the finishing touches on a Stephen ‘Bones’ Murphy set piece delivery.
The second half played host to an open affair as the sides went end to end. After an entertaining attacking period one outfit eventually found the back of the net as Brady fired home to level in style.
Kevin Dunne did have a chance to win it for the visitors, but Lee Murphy denied the big front man and Kilbarrack a parting win over their biggest AUL rivals with a save one on one.
