Metropolitian Cup
Swords Celtic-1
Leixlip United-1
Jamie Quinn was hero extraordinaire for Leixlip United in the Metro Cup on Wednesday night.
It wasn’t quite Derby versus Manchester United, but the second tier side did knock a top flight team out of the cup via spot kicks.
The shootout win owes a lot to Quinn who went above and beyond his expected duties come spot kick time. The recent United signing not only saved two of Swords peno’s he also scored in the shootout.
Swords actually took the lead in the tie, pouncing on a defensive error to take the lead after just 12 minutes.
However, form front man Colin May made it three goals in three games as Liexlip got a deserved leveler.
Both teams pushed hard for the winner with Colin May and Andrew Dagg going close for United and Swords glancing header over the bar right at the death, but extra was called for.
Swords were on top throughout the first half of extra time, but Leixlip had a real chance to win it in the second period.
As it was penalties were called for and the mighty Quinn grabbed himself the headlines.
