Geoghegan double helps Firhouse into third round of Lanigan Cup
Kevin Geoghegan was on the double as Firhouse Clover secured passage to the third round of the David and Paddy Lanigan Cup on Saturday afternoon.
Geoghegan was unlucky not to secure a hat trick as he hit the woodwork twice, but his brace was enough to ensure the Saturday side progressed at UCD’s expense.
The front man opened the scoring on 20 minutes in spectacular fashion lobbing the keeper from a tight angle just outside the area.
UCD responded well and had the better of the play for the remainder of the half, but found keeper Jeff Richardson, one of four debutants on the day, in good form in his first game since returning from an 18 month injury lay off.
Firhouse started the second half the brighter and Geoghegan flirted with giving them a cushion, but was denied twice by the post.
He finally got the insurance goal when he looped the ball over the keeper after a clever Richardson ball and the home side ran out two goal winners.
