FAI SENIOR CUP ROUND 1
Shamrock Rovers – 1 (G.Burke)
Glenville – 0
There was plenty of guts, but no glory tonight for Glenville who were eliminated from the FAI Senior Cup by giants Shamrock Rovers.
The team from the second rung of the Leinster Senior League gave a disciplined performance against their SSE Airtricity League Premier Division opponents, but fell to a single goal defeat at the Tallaght Stadium.
The Palmerstown team brought 500 fans with them on the short trip to Tallaght ad they were certainly heard, but a goal after just twelve minutes from Graham Burke proved decisive.
The winning strike came after some pinball in the box, with a deflected shot finding its way to Burke who rifled home. The Hoops would pin the visitors back for much of the opening half, but Glenville to their credit tried to attack and play football.
Patrick Whelan was being kept very busy in the Glenville goal, but the difference remained one as the game progressed. With the minutes ticking down there was still hope for Glenville that they could snatch an equaliser – but it was Rovers who had the ball in the net through sub Sean Boyd – although it was correctly ruled out offside and the game ended 1-0.
While out of the cup, Glenville can leave Tallaght Stadium tonight with their heads held high.
