FAI Junior Cup
A glorious Gaynor double helped Ardee take a giant step along the Road to the Aviva.
Ardee Celtic’s Gaynor’s Ross and Darryn scored a stand out opener and a brilliant closer between them as Ardee won a NEFL versus AUL FAI Junior Cup clash.
Ardee became the first team to defeat Premier A new boys Kilmore Celtic and progressed to Round 3 courtesy of the win.
Ardee started the game the brighter in dull rain soaked condition. The hosts had early sighters via John Flanagan and Ross Gaynor before eventually taking the lead 60 seconds short of the 20 minute mark.
Gareth Kane looked for Darryn Gaynor in behind and his ball over the top was meet first time by the attacker and found it’s way into the back of the net.
Kilmore threatened a leveler soon after but Samson pulled of a great save to ensure his side stayed in front.
Dayrnn Gaynor then came close again for the home Celtic while Kane dragged an effort wide in what was becoming an entertaining game despite the conditions.
Robert Reynolds then saw a free kick cleared off the line andjust before the break Ardee got the second they were pushing for.
One minute shy of the players had a chance to get in a get temporarily dry Flanagan fired home to put two between the sides.
Kilmore, who have fight to the death previous this season and had a good cup record last term, closed the gap after the turn closed the gap after the turn.
A goal from a corner made a comeback more likely. However, the hosts continued to create the better chances with Darryn Gaynor coming close and William Woods grazing the bar.
With 15 minutes to the NEFL side secured the insurance strike and it was no surprise to see Ross Gaynor score the crucial effort.
The lively attacker beat two players before finishing to ensure his side were odds on to take another step along the Road to the Aviva.
