FAI SENIOR CUP – FIRST ROUND
Wexford FC – 1 (O.McCormack)
Crumlin United – 2 (D.Vickery, J.Donnelly)
Goalkeeper Michael Quinn saved not one, but two penalties tonight in Wexford as Crumlin claimed a stunning win over the SSE Airtricity League First Division side.
The Leinster Senior League side made the journey down to Ferrycarrig Park for the Friday night fixture and came away with a brilliant 2-1 win that puts them in Monday’s draw for the second round.
Crumlin made a sharp start, with Buzzer Rowe threatening before Wexford striker Dean Kelly hit the bar with a free kick after a quarter of an hour.
It was the visitors who took the lead on on twenty-four minutes, with David Vickery slamming in from close range, but the lead would not last long as Wexford youngster Owen McCormack nodded in from a free out wide six minutes later
Wexford started to turn the screw after the break and almost took the lead with a freak diagonal ball from Craig McCabe which almost drifted in.
On the hour mark t Dean Kelly was tripped in the box to hand Wexford a golden opportunity from the spot. Dobbs stood forward to take the resultant penalty but his effort, and subsequent follow up, was sensationally saved by Quinn.
The Crumlin keeper saved a further few half chances from the home side before being called upon again from the spot ten minutes from time. This time it was Dean George tripped in the box and Wexford would elect to use a different penalty taker in Kelly, but the result would be the same with Quinn pulling off another fantastic save.
Crumlin then were in dreamland with just four minutes to go as Jake Donnelly headed home from close range to put the Dubliners in the lead.
Seconds later Wexford hit the bar as Dobbs met a Hurley cross, and the SSE Airtricity League First Division side continued to press, and Kieran Reilly would see red for a second bookable offence, but Crumlin held out for a brilliant win.
