LSL Senior Sunday 1
On a crisp, sunny day in Whitehall Glebe North rolled into Whitehall Stadium to take on the league leaders Home Farm in a fixture that both sides will probably feel they could have taken all three points from. In the end a goal a piece before half time and the same right before the death left a share of the spoils for each side.
In a largely uneventful first half the two bright spots were the goals themselves. A sublime through ball from the Home Farm midfield latched onto by veteran Ollie Cahill and coolly dispatched past the onrushing Glebe stopper. Ten mins later and it was the turn of the visiting side to celebrate as the referee played excellent advantage after a bad tackle. The ball was quickly pushed out to the right and the first time cross that was fizzed in was directed into the bottom left hand corner from the edge of the box by Glebe.
At the beginning of the second half both sides tried to take the front foot but in perfect footballing conditions too many passes were being misplaced and the game started to become a little looser and scrappy. Long balls were being pumped forward in vain and some late tackling meant the referee had to take both skippers aside and instruct them to have a talk with their teams. A couple of half chances came and went with Glebe failing to hit the target on 78 minutes when it seemed certain to be a goal and one minute later a fantastic one two from Home Farms substitute resulting in a powerful shot whistling just over the bar.
On 88 minutes it seemed like the tie had been decided when an attack from Home Farms right back resulted in a corner and when it was swung in their powerful centre half got on the end of it and headed down and past the arms of Glebes keeper. But the game wasn’t over yet and a minute into injury time when the referee awarded a soft free kick on the half way line to Glebe they grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Pumping the ball towards the back post it dropped to the feet of an attacker who laid it back into the six yard box it was somehow scrambled over the line. Final score 2-2 and both sides ruing will be left with a feeling of a missed chance to take more points on the day.
