Stephen Connolly can count himself seriously unlucky- but this weeks JSP Player of the Week had to be Ian Stapleton.
Connolly handed Thomastown United an historic victory over League of Ireland Premier Division side Shamrock Rovers in the Leinster Senior Cup Fourth Round at United Park thanks to a last minuted ‘wonder strike’ Saturday afternoon.
And while the effort deserves plaudits the player was pipped to the Player of the Week gong by Cobh Wanderers’ Stapleton.
Stapleton hit a hat trick as the Munster Senior League side ended Crumlin United’s long running FAI Intermediate Cup winning streak.
The first of the three goals would be a goal of the season winner in any league in the world, while his other two strikes in a 3-2 win came when his side were reduced to 10 men and trailing in the second half.
It wasn’t quite a one man show, but without the finishing of the striker Crumlin could still be on course for three in a row in the prestigiousC contest.
