Cobh Wanderers banked the first silverware of the MSL season on Friday night.
Last seasons FAI Intermediate Cup finalists defeated Castleview to lift the Keane Cup and spark big celebrations.
The win owes a lot to a strong finish in the first half as a quick fire double just before the turn effectively saw Wanderers put on hand on the Cup.
Cobh started well but when Caslteview settled they began to create the better chances. Indeed, Stuart Murphy, Brian O’Keefe and Kieran Kavanagh- who hit the woodwork- all flirted with breaking the deadlock.
However, just when it looked like the the second tier side’s support might dare to dream two goals in two minutes saw them go into the break trailing.
Ian Stapleton broke the deadlock on 40 minutes after he raced onto a Michael O’Shea through ball before finishing low past the keeper.
It didn’t take long for Cobh to celebrating a second as Conor ‘Dub’ Meade found the top corner with beautiful bend just two minutes later.
To their credit Castleview didn’t buckle and had chances after the third most notably Patrick O’Donoghue and Wayne Doherty, but it was Cobh who scored next.
With 12 minutes remaining Cian O’Connor combined with fellow sub Martin Deady before scoring the sealer.
Cobh’s next big cup adventure will be a third round FAI Intermediate Cup clash with Avondale United.
