The Kilkenny & District Premier Division
Thomastown United A-3
The Kilkenny & District Premier Division got underway on Sunday when last years FAI Junior Cup beaten Finalists Evergreen Fc A welcomed local rivals Thomastown United A to the Kells road venue. As always this battle is one to watch out for throughout the years and yesterdays fixture didn’t disappoint.
The game was just under 2 minutes old when an error from Philly Johnson gifted the ball to Steven Connolly who crossed into the path of Sean Brennan and gave Thomastown the early lead. Both sides traded chances after this and both come close but the back lines for both sides were really up for the game, O’Mara and Skehan for Thomastown left very little through the middle and their height and strenght proved a bit to much for the city team. The game remained 1-0 at half time.
Evergreen started the second half just like their counter parts in the first half and after just 2 minutes Sean Barcoe found his way into the Thomastown box and a lazy challenge by Neil O’Mara granted the home team a penalty. Barcoe stepped up and struck the ball to Paul Dunnes right and even though the Thomastown net minder got his hand to it was unable to keep it out. Game on.
Again both sides went for it and even though Thomastown had a call for a penalty of their own the referee gave a free out. Looking like the game was going to end as a draw as both teams were unable to break down the others defence up stepped Steven Connolly for Thomastown who battled his way in the end line an stuck a sweet left footed volley which left Johnson with no chance and advantage back into the visitors hands. Thomastown were able to make some very good tactical substitutions throughout the second half and one of them was Bobby Joe Walsh and just 3 minutes from time an Andy Kavanagh corner found Walsh on the front post and his shot sealed a great victory for the visitors.
