LSL Senior Sunday
The first big clash of the new season failed to produce a winner as St Mochtas and Bluebell ended all square on Sunday morning.
Both last seasons champions and their predecessors as title holders had a chance to lay down an early marker with victory against a side expected to challenge for the title, but managed to cancel each other out as they shared opening day spoils.
The game started with both trying to play football and Bluebell attempted to draw first blood, but Gary Seery’s strike was save well by Craig Hyland in the Mochtas goal.
Luke Kelly and Karl Somers then had half chances for the Saints in the minutes that followed before Peter Sherlock headed a visiting set piece just over the bar.
New signing Hyland then produced three saves to ensure his side were level come the turn. The former Shamrock Rovers net minder denied O’Hanlon and Seery before Mochtas hit the side netting via a Anto Flood header.
The Bluebell keeper had to show his worth post the turn. Hayden making solid if not spectacular saves to deny Noel Murray and Somers. When the keeper was beaten by a clever Kenny Carr lob his defence were on hand to clear.
As the half wore on the home side started to dominate, but without creating anything too clear cut.
They emptied a strong bench with the likes of Philly Hughes and Keith Dunne entering the fray, but couldn’t find a break through.
Indeed they needed a brilliant Hyland save right at the death to ensure a share of the spoils in a game that Muprhy saw red.
