FAI Junior Cup
Regional United- 2
Nenagh AFC-1
A man famed for his point scoring exploits for Limerick Intermediate hurlers hit the goals that saw Regional United reach Round 5 of the FAI Junior Cup.
Willie Griffin hit a brace as last seasons quarter finalist came from behind to beat Nenagh AFC in one of two massive Limerick hosted clashes in the all Ireland tournament on Sunday.
Griffin had won plaudits when he captained Limerick Inters to the 2015 Munster Final beating Tipperary along the way. He proved he can still be a torn in Tipp oppositions sides in a different code on Sunday as he inspired Regional to victory over Nenagh.
Regional, who currently sit second in the Limerick District league, a position Nenagh finished in last season, started well, but the up right denied both Ciaran O’Connell and player manger Ray Lynch.
Ben Banaghan then broke in behind to finish and give the visitors the lead. However, the advantage didn’t last too long as Griffin collected an Andrew Cowpar pass and rounded the keeper to score within five minutes.
The sides were deadlocked at the break, but Regional looked more likely after the turn and after the hit the frame again they took the lead.
Griffin ensured himself hero status as he volleyed home to send his side along the Road to the Aviva and into the open draw.
