There are not many clubs that can boast a Junior and Intermediate Cup double. Even rarer are clubs that have managed to be crowned Junior then Intermediate kings with just one season respite.
Liffey Wanderers became only the fourth side to win the Intermediate crown within two years of claiming the Junior equivalent, when two seasons after they defeated Sheriff in the Aviva they returned to defeat Cobh Wanderers in dramatic fashion.
Wanderers followed in the footsteps of fellow quickfire double winners Bray Wanderers, TEK United, Distillery and Cherry Orchard and completed a double the likes of which we may have to wait another generation to see again.
Before the Pearse Street side enjoyed another Aviva day out last month, The Orchard were the most recent to manage the achievement.
That 1994/95 and 1997/98 double has a different feel to it, but we decided to travel down memory lane and have a look back at the wins nonetheless.
Liffey’s success is pure odds defying as their first team won both cups, first as an LSL Major outfit and then as a third tier LSL Intermediate side.
Cherry Orchard’s Junior Cup win was the real surprise as it was their clubs Saturday side that brought national glory onto the club. Their Intermediate counterparts followed suit two years later but in less shocking fashion.
The Orchard’s second string of over 20 years ago won the Cup on a replay. central midfielder Joe Somerville scored in a 1-1 draw with Kilmore Boys as the decider went to a replay. The sides couldn’t be separated in the repeat and after a 0-0 draw the destination of the FAI Junior Cup would only be known after a nail bitting peno shoot out.
The Orchard eventually won 8-7 in Tolka Park to eventually claim a historic victory.
The side that day was as follows:

LB -Chris Madden

CM – Joe Somerville
CM – Graham Doyle
LW -Brendan O’Riordan

ST – Gary Bynre

That Cherry Orchard squad also won the league and the Leinster Junior Cup the same season, the first Saturday outfit ever to complete such a treble.
