Mayfield United twice came from behind to deny Cobh Wanderers a victory in the Saturday afternoons Munster Senior League opener.
Wanderers, who got promoted after a three team promotion play off at the end of last season twice took the lead in an entertaining clash, but Mayfield secured a point thanks to two set piece finishes, as the MSL season opened with an entertaining score draw.
The hosts had the better of the early exchanges and were rewarded on 19 minutes when Mickey O’Shea collected a pass and and smashed right footed past the keeper.
Within 10 minutes Alan O’Flynn had a chance to extend the advantage, but he saw an effort saved after being put through one on one.
Ian Stapleton had an opportunity soon after when a wayward clearance landed at his feet, but the former Avondale player found the keepers arms rather than the net.
Mayfield had threatened via set pieces and it was surprise when they leveled from a corner. Kevin O’Connell squeezed home a header from an in swinging corner.
The goal seemed to stun Wanderers and allow Mayfield to take total control of the opening period of the second half.
The visitors free kicks and corners continued to be a cause for major concern for the home defence but against the run of play Wanderers re-took the lead.
Stapleton took the ball into the right corner before turning back on his left foot and swinging a cross to the far post where Dave Stack got just enough of a touch to force it across the line despite the best efforts of the defender to clear.
Mayfield continued to press and found another equalizer on 71 minutes. Another corner was met by the tallest player on the pitch, Ian Fleming and his effort found the net via the gloves of Devine and the game finished all square as a result.
