MSL Senior Premier
Mayfield United leap frogged Douglas Hall and moved up to fourth in the Munster Senior League Premier League table.
Mayfield hit two in the first half and managed to hold on despite Hall flirting with a comeback after turn to bank three valuable points.
Douglas Hall had the best of the opening ten minutes and Rob Lehane was sent through one on one but the Mayfield keeper saved with his feet. Then, on 14 minutes Mayfield landed the first blow, scoring from good through ball in behind the Hall defence.
The home side did their best to come back and Lehane once again was at the centre of the action on 21 minutes, but his snapshot from the penalty spot went wide. After 30 minutes, Mayfield were further ahead as Kevin O’Connell hit a dipping volley over Barrons head and into the net. There was no real incident of note between then and half time with neither the Hall or Mayfield really creating anything.
In the second half, Hall flew out of the blocks and forced a decent save from the Mayfield keeper after 46 minutes. On 48 minutes, Hall were handed a lifeline as a free kick was floated in and Lehane rose highest to head home excellently. Hall had a few more good chances but couldn’t put the ball home and as the game wore on Mayfield began to look more comfortable. The game finished with a series of corners for the Hall but the Mayfield goal was never really threatened. There is a break from league action next weekend as the Beamish Cup takes centre stage
