FAI Junior Cup
Malahide United-3 (Tolka win 4-3 on penalties)
Tolka replicated Liverpool’s famous comeback in Istanbul 2005 with a dramatic come from behind win in the FAI Junior Cup on Saturday afternoon.
The side that knocked Crumlin out of the all Ireland competition in the last round managed to scalp another top flight Saturday side, Malahide in the fourth round.
However, this victory was achieved in the most dramatic fashion. Ala Liverpool versus AC Milan over a decade ago, Tolka trailed by three goals at half time, but inspired by Joey McDonnell they came back to force extra time and eventually penos.
Rovers won 4-3 on spot kicks to reach the open draw.
The home side dominated the first half and romped into a three goal lead, which they took into the break.
However, Tolka and McDonnell in particular produced second half heroics to get back into the game.
Talisman McDonnell made it six goals in six games scoring a hat trick after the turn around, the third of which came via a penalty he himself had won.
Telling in that incident with penalties an option was the dismissal of Malahide’s first choice keeper.
The attackers strikes before that came via assists from James Callan and Colin Eccles. Callan’s free being controlled and chested home by the eventual hat trick hero before he he got on the end of a ball flashed across the box after Eccles broke in behind.
Tolka couldn’t take advantage of the extra man in extra time, but eventually managed to grab a place in the open draw with a penalty shootout win.
Callum Atkinson grabbed some of the spot light of McDonnell as he saved the first Malahide peno, the Gannon Park side blasted their last one over the bar.
