Clare District League First Division League Cup
Newmarket Celtic B-4
Avenue United B-2
Callum McNamara hit a double as Newmarket Celtic eventually saw of Avenue United to claim the League Cup over the weekend.
Celtic lead from early but couldn’t quite shake off Avenue as United kept battling back into contention, but eventually secured victory with two goals to spare and lifted the cup under Saturday night lights.
Front man McNamara opened the scoring on six minutes when he rounded the keeper and finished, but true to the nature of the final Avenue fought back.
Gary Roche leveled proceedings just four minutes later when he pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home after a corner wasn’t cleared.
The final was living up to it’s billing and within seven minutes another goal was being celebrated.
McNamara was provider this time pulling a ball back into the path of Gavin O’Donnell, who fired home.
Ciaran ‘Ginga’ McCoy then gave Newmarket some breathing space as he put the finishing touches on some fine O’Donnell work to give his side a two goal half time cushion.
Avenue showed real fight and managed to make it a one goal lead just short of the hour. That strike set up a tense final half an hour but when Conor McDaid saw red with nine minutes to go it played straight into the hands of Celtic.
Indeed Newmarket went on the seal the win when McNamara raced onto a brilliant Ronan McAuley pass to finish.
