After the defeat in the Tipperary Cup final the previous weekend Peake Villa exacted a certain amount of revenge on the Saints when they finished their season with a win, and denied the Champions a defeat free season last Tuesday night.
Both teams made a number of changes from the Cup final but that didn’t reflect on the intensity that the replacements played with as the sides went about their business right from the off. The home side started the quicker and took the lead when Damien Grimes finished well after some great build up play from Keith Cahill and Maris Baltins.
Grimes and red hot youth player Ronan Maguire were giving the visitors all kinds of problems and Maguire almost reached the sixty goals for the season mark when he turned the Saints defence inside out before shooting just wide. There were no more goals in the first period but the home side continued their domination in the second half and finally doubled their lead when Grimes again scored, this time after a piece of individual brilliance which saw him curl a ball into the top corner from almost twenty five yards out.
The Saint’s never like to lose, even when the game is a dead rubber and they made some changes which added some impetus to their game, and they pulled a goal back with a cracking finish. But it was the home side whose dander was up, and the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Ronan Maguire’s goal which made it three to nil. This is a coming team and both these sides are going to be seeing a lot of each other at the silverware end of the season in the years ahead.
