LSL Senior Sunday
Two fine individual efforts from David Somers and Adam Burke ushered St Mochtas back to the top of the table on Wednesday night.
The Saints defeated Greystones to return to winning ways to go top on goal difference at this early stage.
Greystones had managed to stay level up and until 19 minutes to go, but Somers showed some fine footwork in the area to break the deadlock and Burke scored his first goal for the club in one of his first touches after coming off the bench to wrap it up.
The home side, who lost to Firhouse over the weekend, started the brighter and Somers and Keith Dunne flirted with opening the scoring in the opening ten minutes.
Stones had a brief period of pressure, but Dunne came close again on 20 minutes forcing a save after a fine run.
Two minutes later and Gary Dempsey came closer again as the visiting player manager hit the base of the post with a brilliant free kick.
The Saints responded well and Dunne, Somers and Luke Kelly all forced the Greystones keeper into a good save before the break.
The tie looked finely poised early in the second half and both sides were searching for the opening goal, but no avail until the 69 minute as Somers found the net.
The midfielder collected a pass from Dunne did brilliant to buy himself some space in a crowded area and prodded home his third goal in four games.
Although Alan McGreal twice fired over it was Greystones who were pushing the hardest over the final few minutes.
Any chance the Wicklow side may snatch a point went up in smoke when Anthony Burke riffled into the top corner from just inside the area right at the death.
