Coady Mulhall was on the double as last seasons finalists Newbridge Town progressed to the third round of the Metro Cup on Friday night.
The front man scored a brace and ultimately proved the difference as Newbridge over came Portlaoise to reach the next round.
The visitors had looked comfortable going into the final 15 mintues with a three goal advantage, but the hosts rallied late and got to within one.
However, the full time whistle game before they could turn the game on it’s head.
Town had made nine changes from the side that secured an impressive win over Firhouse in the league last weekend, but still looked a strong outfit.
Although despite having more of the ball in the first half they probably should have went into the break trailing as the hosts missed a glorious chance and a peno in the opening 45.
The second half remained a even affair, but after making a number of changes the visitors finally broke the deadlock three minutes short of the hour. A quickly taken throw was followed by a clever turn and finish from Mullhall and Newbridge were in front.
Mulhall and former Bluebell United player Aji Sule then combined well to allow Sule to keep up his scoring run and put the away side two clear just eight minutes later.
Mulhall then finished again within three minutes as Town all but put the tie to bed.
However, two strikes post 80 minutes from James Mullaney got the hosts within one, but it proved too little too late and Newbridge continued on into the next round.
