FAI Intermediate Cup
St Patricks CY-2
Ballymun United came from behind to scalp St Patricks CY and set up a last 16 clash of the FAI Intermediate Cup with back to back champs Crumlin United on Sunday.
The LSL Senior 1A side beat the Senior Sunday team at the second time of asking recovering from a poor start to progress to the fourth round.
Noel Downey claimed hero status as his brace proved key in the victory.
Neither side could find the net in the first encouther, but the replay had a goal before the 15 minute mark passed.
Jason Doyle, who scored a brace midweek pounced on a defensive error to put the top flight charge in front. The Mun responded well, but despite playing some good football over the next few minutes didn’t test the visiting keeper.
The home side did manage to go in level at the break, however, as Downey scored the first of his two strikes.
The front man benefited from some never give up spirit from Sam Dodd, as he managed to keep the ball in play and work the ball into Downey allowing him to finish well.
Ballymun shaded possession after the turn and got reward 18 minutes into the second half as Downey found the net again.
CY then bombarded the home area, but The Mun defence stood tall and indeed it was Joey Graydon’s charges who had the games next big chance.
Recent signing and substitute Lee Somers shot over the bar when it looked certain he was going to push the cushion to two. Ringsend side Pats CY’s chances seemed to increase further as Downey received his marching orders for an off the ball incident.
The visitors did come close to forcing extra time, but missed from six yards late on. They were then caught on the break and Somers made up for his earlier miss to give the host some breathing space.
It was space they needed as St Patrick’s CY did manage to score a second goal in quite some style, Lee Harrison finding the top corner in injury time, but it proved too little too late even for a side with dramatic comeback previous.
