The Munster/Connacht region will represent the Republic of Ireland in the 2016 UEFA Regions Cup after they defeated Leinster/Ulster in Saturday’s ‘test game’ at the AUL Complex.
The single goal victory means the Irish side to represent the country in an Italian hosted tournament will be made up of players from Munster and Cannacht leagues and clubs.
Ireland are the reigning champions have won the contest in Tallaght last year, that time out when the country was split into two Regions rather than Counties combined.
The Martin Loughran coached Leinster/Ulster side were fancied to win on Saturday at the AUL, but were caught by a sucker punch on 79 minutes and the Musnter/Connacht select held of for victory.
Leinster/Ulster dominated the first period without creating to many guilt edged opportunities.
Greg Moorehouse saw a close range effort well saved early in te first half, but Munster/Connacht grew into the tie and scored with 11 minutes remaining to ensure they will represent Ireland in the prestigious UEFA Regions Cup.
Wesport defender David Hoban found himself in nose bleed territory and swiveled on a knock down to score the decisive strike.
