Two Lee Murtagh strikes kept alive Newtown Rangers chances of promotion on Sunday.
Rangers move to within a point of the top three and within three of top spot with victory over Dublin University.
The victory keeps the Tallaght side right in the promotion mix and within touching distance of Liffey Wanderers, Ballymun United and Tullamore Town.
The first half was very slow and pedestrian affair with neither creating many chances of note. Brian Malee did have a header just over the bar, but the sides went in level and scoreless at the break.
The home manager let it be known he wasn’t happy at the break and Newtown came out with a lot more purpose in the second half.
Former Firhouse Clover midfielder Darren O’Grady started to see more of the ball and began creating chances for Karl and Lee Murtagh.
Indeed Lee Murtagh opened the scoring just 9 minutes into the second stanza firing across the advancing keeper from 18 yards to find the bottom corner.
The striker doubled his and his sides tally less than 10 minutes later as he smashed home from five yards.
Dublin University had a great chance 5 mins from time, but for a great saving tackle from centre half Adam Bailey ensured the hosts kept a clean sheet.
