Leinster Junior Cup
St Pauls Artane-2
There was AUL Premier A hangover for St Pauls as they took on Hanover Harps in the Leinster Junior Cup on Sunday.
The Saints haven’t won a league game this term and had suffered a gut checking comeback defeat to Kilmore last week, but managed to get over the disappointment to round 2 of the prestigious competition with an impressive performance against Carlow opposition.
The home side got off to a bright start and found themselves in front after 20 minutes. Conor Donaghue fired in a cross come shot that caught the keeper off guard and found it’s way into the top corner.
15 minutes later and the AUL side had a two goal cushion this time after a number of good Hanover blocks just inside the area the ball arrived at the feet of Ryan Fitzsimons, he took a touch 19 yards out and placed the ball into the bottom corner, finding the net via a crowded penalty area.
Hanover put themselves back into contention when the poked home come goal mouth scramble time after a corner of 43 minutes.
Hanover had patches of dominance after the turn, but Pauls looked a danger on the break.
The hosts couldn’t capitalise on the chances they created and in the end needed some very important finger tip saves from Stephen Whelan to ensure they went through to the next round.
