FAI Intermediate Cup 2nd Round
Portmarnock AFC – 3
St James’ Gate – 3
AET (Portmarnock win 4-3 on penalties)
Portmarnock progressed to the Third Round of the FAI Intermediate Cup after they edged an impressive St James Gate side on penalties at Paddy’s Hill on Sunday afternoon.
Last season’s semi-finalists began the game with a flourish as they broke the deadlock inside the opening minute through a header from David Reddin.
The Gate then equalized through a John O’Connor strike, however the hosts were back in front before the break after Alan O’Shaughnessy slotted home.
The second-half consisted of the visitors chasing a goal to bring the game level once more and came close through David Martin and Robert Douglas.
Dean Fallon and Jack O’Donnell were then introduced midway through the half and it was the same duo who combined to score a dramatic injury-time equalizer when Fallon picked out O’Donnell who bundled home.
Extra-time proved just as entertaining and Porto once again took the front foot when the in-form Davey Sheppard scored a delightful chip to make it 3-2.
In similar circumstances to normal time Gate again found a leveler seconds before the final-whistle. O’Connor received an inch-perfect cross from Douglas before taking it on the chest and volleying it deep into the bottom corner.
The game went to penalties and Portmarnock prevailed by winning 4-3 to bring a cracking Intermediate Cup tie to a close.
