FAI SENIOR CUP – FIRST ROUND
Portmarnock AFC – 0
St Patrick’s Athletic – 2 (C.Fagan, G.Whelan OG)
Portmarnock provided a stern test today, but were unable to shock SSE Airtricity League Premier Division side St Patrick’s Athletic in the first round of the FAI Senior Cup.
The Leinster Senior League team were well-marshalled throughout, but late goals in both halves saw them eliminated.
Indeed it was a cagey first half in the seaside town, with Pats unable to really break down their amateur opponents. However, at this level it takes but one chance, and Christy Fagan nodded Michael Barker’s injury time cross into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead.
Portmarock held firm after the break and looked to have forged an opening with fifteen minutes to go, only for a fantastic saving tackle from Jordi Balk to deny the goalbound David Sheppard.
Invigorated, the Fingal side continued to push hard looking for an equaliser, only to be hit on the break in the closing minutes, with Gareth Whelan unfortunately turning into his own net to add some gloss to the scoreline for Pats
