Leinster Junior Cup Final
Evergreen – 0
Sheriff YC – 2
Sheriff YC defeated Kilkenny champions Evergreen 2-0 to win the Leinster Junior Cup at Castlecomer on Sunday afternoon and in the process won their fifth trophy of the season to complete a remarkable campaign for the Dublin club.
Coming into the game Sheriff had already won four major trophies, the AUL Premier A, the AUL Liddy Cup, the AUL Nivea Cup and of course, the FAI Junior Cup meaning that the Leinster Junior Cup crown was all that stood between them and their ‘drive for five’.
Inside 15 minutes Sheriff took the lead when their ‘keeper Lee Murphy’s monstrous kick out was headed into the Evergreen net by their own defender.
On the half-hour mark, YC were inches from doubling their advantage when their centre-half Anto Kavanagh’s header rocketed off the crossbar. They also had two excellent chances cleared off the line while Evergreen also had a glorious opportunity of their own to level the scoring through Darragh Walshe, however Murphy made a super stop to ensure the score remained one nil heading into the break.
The second-half continued to be played at an extremely high tempo but neither side could convert their chances until the 77th minute when YC were rewarded a spot kick.
Evergreen were reduced to ten men and John Lester stepped up and planted the ball home to make it 2-0 with just over ten minutes remaining.
Sheriff saw out the remaining minutes to seal the trophy and to collect their fifth set of a winners’ medals this season.
Congratulations to Alan Reilly and all the Sheriff staff and players on completing a historic 2015/16 campaign where every trophy lifted was thoroughly deserved.
