Navan Cosmos won’t field a first a team next season.
The club claim to be ‘utterly bewildered’ they have been forced into the position, but stress they have been left with little option but to pull the plug on their senior set up for the foreseeable future.
It won’t just be the Cosmos Committee that will be left shocked, they wider football family will also be surprised by the news.
The CCFL side had enjoyed unprecedented success in recent season winning titles and enjoying late runsNEFLthe junior cups.
Indeed they beat Sheriff in the Leinster Senior Cup and made the semi finals of the Leinster Junior last season, only to be defeated by eventual winners Collinstown.
A number of players had left over the Summer and manager Derek Coogan departed over the weekend.
The managers departure seemed to be the last straw and the club have confirmed their withdrawal from Senior activity today.
A club statement read:
It is with deep regret that we announce we will not be competing at senior level and have withdrawn from the North East Football league for this coming season.
We are utterly bewildered and truly saddened as a club to have to take this course of action in what is our 40th year in existence .
In the past weeks and days we have explored multiple options and alternatives but it was with a lot of soul searching and with a heavy heart we have arrived at this decision.
We wish all the players every continued success , and would take this opportunity to thank everyone who has ever worn the clubs jersey, the managers and coaches and hard pressed officials who all contributed to the club over the last 40 years.
We will continue to put all our time and efforts into our thriving underage section with 17 teams currently playing every week.
We hope to bring our senior teams back in the near future.
