It’s a goal that will go down in history.
Defender Sean McLoughlin fired home an 83 minute winner to secure the title on the final day for UCC.
If the final day winner takes all victory wasn’t enough, McLoughlin’s strike made sure UCC won their first every MSL crown and ensured the Cork side were the first to win the Collingwood Cup and the MSL Premier in the same season.
At first glance the strike looks like an expert finish, but the player himself suggests he all but closed his eyes and swung his leg in hope as the ball was laid off to him.
“With regards to the goal, I’m not really sure what I was doing that far up the pitch,” he told UCC’s PRO post the game.
“There was a few scuffed shots at the edge of the box and eventually Mark Murphy set the ball to me and I managed to direct it towards goal. Thankfully it went in! It could have went anywhere being honest. It’s a great achievement for the college!”
Speaking about the achievement McLoughlin expressed how hard it is for the side to win the league when year on year they have to field different sides.
“Everyone involved in the club is delighted with the win. It tops off a great season for us, adding to the Collingwood Cup. It’s difficult with UCC as we lose the players who graduate every year.
“We managed to keep the core of our squad from last year though and added some new lads. This helped us go a step further than last year when we lost on the final day to Avondale.
“We knew we were in for a tough game with Cobh as they also had a great season but Noel and the the management got the tactics spot on which let us play our own game.”
