FAI Junior Cup
Willow Park 6
There are some at the club who have labelled this win one of the ‘best ever’ Willow Park performances.
For a side that have won cups and leagues galore before they moved from the CCFL to the LSL that is some statement.
Willow were missing some key players and had their squad fully extended, but still managed to put six past a plucky Blessington outfit to progress in the FAI Junior Cup.
Willow opened the scoring when Kevin Murray buried a penalty after a handball.
Kieran McNally then neatly finished after great approach work from Glen Byrne to make it two.
Blessington threatened to half the deficit but missed a close range header before the hosts got a vital third.
Benny Magennis released McNally in on goal to round the keeper, finish and extend the advantage further.
McNally then showed his all-round qualities when he appeared on the goal-line to nick the ball away from an attacker who was certain to score.
The second half started with the Wicklow side trying to get back into proceedings and the home keeper was forced to tip a dangerous effort over the top.
Willow withstood Blesington’s best efforts and McNally completed a brilliant hat-trick when released again by the cleverness of Benny Magennis.
Brian Malone then showed his quality by flicking the ball over the advancing keeper for Robbie Forde to have an easy finish as the hosts turned on the style.
The goal of the game came very late when Benny Magennis picked up possession 30 yards from goal, went on a mazy dribble and finished brilliantly into the corner of the net.
